======Jet Crash.======
Tuesday, June 30, 2009. We just again had an airplane
crash this morning. A jet of the Yemeni airlines crashed in the
Indean ocean. It seems that 153 people died. With this, again
a large tragedy has happened. We are shocked. And we are
mourning. Families have been separated. Young and old people
with their hopes have been killed. It is difficult to
comprehend.

Tragedies like the ones we experience today have always been
a part of human life. In general, our life is not save on this
planet. It is always fragile, threatened by various things,
by illnesses, by sudden catastrophes, by other people, by
accidents which can happen any time. Our attitude of life has
to take into account the fragility of human life!
In the Gospel of Luke, 13,3-5, Jesus speaks about such tragic
death. But he gives his thoughts about it a particular direction.
He refuses to speak about particular causes.
Jesus answered, "Do you think that these Galileans were
worse sinners than all the other Galileans because they
suffered this way? 3 I tell you, no! But unless you repent,
you too will all perish. 4 Or those eighteen who died
when the tower in Siloam fell on themdo you think they
were more guilty than all the others living in Jerusalem?
5 I tell you, no! But unless you repent, you too will all perish."
It is adequate to use news of such tragic events as a turning
point of our own life. Our usual orientation towards worldly
success, possessions and reputation is not adequate for life and
does not lead into any good future. Catastrophes like the one
today seem to point out to us how fragile all this is. Our life
is limited, we all face death, at some point in our life
all our plans will come to an end.
Is there any hope for human life? Is there a future? When we
face death, we might think that there is nothing to gain.
But when God comes to us, we are consoled. He is the great comforter.
He is the one who will wipe away our tears. He is there in our
darkest hour. He opens new futures. He is mourning with us,
and he holds us in his hand. When he is there, we are not lost.
