Do we need reason? When I hear the word "reason" a whole bunch of memories come to my mind. "Come to reason!" ... that is more the word of a father or a mother which is talking with a child, when the child wants something and the parents think it is not possible or useful. {{2012_06_01.jpg }} **Do we need reason? ...** So reason is often used when we talk about something, which is nice or pleasant, but what we perhaps should not do for some reasons. Reason plays the role of the big joy killer. Reason is what is between us and fun. Do we need reason? Do we need the joy killers? Do we need the walls between what we should and what we want? Who determines what we should? Too often, commands of ethics or religion come to us as external force. Too often, we do not really understand them. And too often again the people, who promote them, do not understand them either and use them in a repelling way. We do not want this kind of reason! We do not need this kind of reason! It is one of the features of modern societies, that they incorporate quite some freedom for individuals to determine how people want to live. Of course, there are many rules as well. Societies are complicated networks of expectations and rules. But there is quite some freedom as well today, with patchwork families, equal-sex partnerships, free choice of faith, freedom of travel and freedom of political activities. Let us let a new kind of reason evolve in our mind and in our life! Let us discover the reason which is built on and in freedom! Reason in its original meaning is the power of the mind in the middle of life. Reason means that we start to think, to investigate, to question, to observe, to draw conclusions. Reason can be a fresh and compelling human activity, fascinating and full of joy! This fresh reason is human. It is basic. It does not start with prejudice, but it avoids prejudice! It is not the big superego, but it is a chance. It is the chance to learn about the world, and to learn about faith, about Christ, about who God is and what he wants, yesterday, today and tomorrow!
