Friday, July 3, 2015. Where do you find wisdom? Where do you find good advice, which is just and sustainable and reaches deep into your life, into reality, into you daily sorrows and your daily dreams and hopes and desires?
Proverbs of Solomon …
The biblical book of the Proverbs of Solomon provides an introduction into wisdom. It is an introduction into a wise life, into knowledge and understanding. Sometimes today our academics think that knowledge and understanding has been brought to the western world by the enlightment and the scientific revolution - and indeed that has strongly expanded our insight into the laws of nature. But knowledge and understanding has moved humans ever since, and the book of Solomon which reaches back to the reign of king Solomon between 970 and 940 BC has important things to say!
1 The proverbs of Solomon son of David, king of Israel: 2 for gaining wisdom and instruction; for understanding words of insight; 3 for receiving instruction in prudent behavior, doing what is right and just and fair; 4 for giving prudence to those who are simple, knowledge and discretion to the young— 5 let the wise listen and add to their learning, and let the discerning get guidance— 6 for understanding proverbs and parables, the sayings and riddles of the wise. 7 The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge, but fools despise wisdom and instruction. Prologue: Exhortations to Embrace Wisdom (Proverbs 1)
The task here is to gain wisdom and understanding. It is about knowledge and insight, but also about actions, about doing, about deeds.
Sincere Questions! …
There are those who sincerely want to make progress in wisdom and understanding. Not everyone is like that, but there are some, and for them these words are written. It is for young people, but not only for the young. It is for the wise. Interesting enough! Those, who have started to gain wisdom, will search more. They are able to add to their learning. Guidance comes to those who are able to listen. You need some wisdom, to open your ears!
And the author comes to the important points right away: the fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. It is not its end, but its starting point. We need to become aware that God is God, and that it is his justice and his power, which will ultimately reign.
Fools despise wisdom and instruction. That is one important point! Only those who are eager to learn and to listen and to be corrected will make progress with respect to wisdom. You cannot improve if you reject correction! (RWEP) ... more texts
