What fills my life? ...

Thursday, Feb 16, 2012. We go to the cinema in the evening. We meet friends in town. We enjoy sports and play with friends. What fills my days?

Friends, Money, Leisure, …

When we look into what fills our days, we find work there, we find family there. For many of us days are full from early morning to late evening. A mother with a child, who is working at the same time, is getting up at 6am, bringing the child to school at 7:30, going to work at 8, coming back from a full day at 5, then picking up the child from the creche, playing with it, there are various activities, then the good night story at 7:30, … and cleaning up the household until 9pm … the day does not have a lot of free time.

Others have more time, they are even bored out, since after school the whole afternoon is available … but not much to do. So they start with this or that … Some are single, but are quite busy with organising their day. Others take care of a family, but still find time for a hobby - we are all different and everyone has a particular way to approach things.

What is it that draws us, what attracts us, what is important to us? Some of us want to be well-known. Others want to earn as much money as possible, have a nice BMW to drive and spend holidays on Pacific islands. There are those who like it to be in control. If they have clear visions which help everyone, that might be ok. But there are those who do not care about the whole or the others, they just like the thrill of power, the thrill of being the one who can make others do things.

Faith …

It is highly exciting to look how Jesus approached all these things. He did not earn money, he was the Lord anyway. He is the owner of the Universe, why should he bother about earning things. He was not looking into power. He is the Lord anyway, he controls everything, but he wants freedom for every human.

Jesus was free from everything, but free in a very constructive way. He did not use his freedom for destructive purposes, but he used it to serve. He is the great servant, the great helper, the one who provides. He used his freedom to show a different approach to life, an approach of freedom and service.

It is good to have the freedom to do enjoyable things. But to fully develop this freedom we also need the freedom which Jesus showed. It is a freedom resting in the creator of the universe. It is a freedom fully filled by love and dedication, a freedom full of consideration. It is a freedom filled by the Lord. (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
