Tuesday, Feb 24, 2009. Yesterday we have talked about the question, what we want for our life. Probably we could talk for hours about different aspects of this sitting in a nice English pub or with a cup of tea in some tea house at the coast. What are the pros and cons for our job, for particular decisions we have to make. I am a researcher at a University, working daily with new ideas about methods, simulations and reconstructions. I like being together with students and collaborators, building an international network of curiosity and friendship. I am exited about both research and teaching. I like to discover the unknown, to get real and deep insight into important basic questions.

But there are also many things I do not like. Today scientists are squeezed from all sides. We need to bring in grant money. We need to be world leading - the pressure is strong: publish or perish. We should educate untergraduate and graduate students. We need to be applied and help industry, but at the same time have new ideas which last for decades and centuries (all within 38.5 or 40 hours per week?). But the pressure is not less for people in industry. Having the unique product and competing with a global economy is challenging for many. You might be top today, you could loose everything tomorrow.

To know Jesus as he acts and speaks in the New Testament is a very important thing for all my activities. He somehow puts me onto a solid ground. I might be completely excited and drawn into science - draw all the purpose of my life from scientific discovery. But that is not healthy, not sustainable. Of course it is one key feature of our humanity to be curious, we want to know, to understand and to influence everything. But it is only one feature. There is much more about us - relations, community, joy, love, dedication to others for example. This is the same or even more important when I face the negative features of my job or our world today. I am not completely bound to the limits of our society. I can see beyond, develop new ideas and new hope which has its source in the living God. [R.P., Reading, UK]
