My Calling 3 - Experiences with calling ...

Thursday, April 15, 2010. When we talk about calling and God's way with us, it is often helpful to talk about particular examples. Today I will start with myself and look into my own calling.

Profession

I am a physicist and mathematician by training, I have studied both subjects and, in addition, did a lot of philosophy. God gave me some mathematical gift and also the gift to bring theory and applications together, to work in different environments, academic, business and administrative. Today, I work for a federal ministry in Germany as a leading scientist in their research and development section. We incorporate millions of measurements from satellite data, radar stations, airplanes, ships and meteorological stations into high-performance code simulating the earth's atmosphere and generating weather and climate forecast. It is a big research task, a big service task and important for large and crucial parts of our everyday life like airlines or logistic enterprises, but also our personal planning of clothing and transport.

I can say that I feel some clear calling into research, and also some calling to develop research in a social environment where it is important for us humans, where it has large impact and where everything comes together. This calling has been confirmed on many levels, though my personal path has not been very simple. I became a university teacher, but did not get a position in Germany, but got a nice job in the UK. We moved to England, but my wife could not work there. So after some years we moved back, all that with three kids. But still the calling is clear. I have the talent to be quick in research and development, to have ideas, to work them out and get them published, to work with other researchers, with PhD students and colleagues. Clearly, not everything is perfect and I have my weaknesses. But the calling is clear and step by step the Lord opened opportunities.

Faith Life

Since I came to faith in Jesus Christ, I have been active in communicating the gospel. From the very beginning, God gave me a background where I knew all the questions and doubts. I have been living in a secular world thinking secular thoughts for quite a while. But I discovered Christ and I am more fascinated by the Lord in father, son and holy spirit every day.

God gave me a calling to work on conversations about the gospel. I am not called to be a pastor, though I have been working as elder and other responsible positions for our churches. But I am called to write and talk about the Lord, to pick up the questions and to try to offer answers as far as I understand them. God has called me to do that, and then people came who wanted to use my texts. We started small years ago with the internet activities, and it grew and grew, with more than a million page views on the texts just over the past 12 month. I see this as one building block in the confirmation of the call. When you are called by the Lord, you try to follow and then see whether your understanding of his guidance was correct.

God's calling is not something static, but highly dynamic. You need to move to see it develop. You need to follow it, to find out more. You need to be open where he leads you next - it might be unexpected, but he will put things together in the end. His calling is one of the most fascinating thing of this world, coming right after the Lord himself. He takes us into his purpose, into his eternal goals! ... more texts
