Balance and Responsibility IV - Take Responsibility Serious ...

Thursday, August 12, 2010. What does it mean to take responsibility serious? We want to explore some important steps today. One of the problems is that we might talk about responsibility, but we do not work it out. We search for others who we might hold responsible for something, instead of taking the responsibility ourselves. So lets talk about what we could do about this …!

Serious? Tell the Truth

First of all, we should search the truth and tell the truth. That means we need to start with ourselves. We need to be open for the truth about our own activities, our own life, our own thoughts. We might not do what we should - and listening to the words of Jesus in the New Testament it becomes clear rather soon that in fact we don't do what we need to do.

Jesus asks us to “love our neighbor”. Do we? We will be held responsible for this. That is our responsibility. He asks us to be helpful and friendly to everyone. We will be held responsible for every word we speak. That is the truth. I might like it or I might not like this. It is written, it is fact.

I am no friend of dogmatic approaches to God. But still, there is deep truth in the biblical stories and we need to listen, need to “eat and drink” this truth to become a part of our life. Jesus said we should “eat” himself - to indicate the way in which we need to pick up his life and truth.

Take Actions

And we need to act. We need to love. We need to let love become practical. That needs decisions and actions.

For example, when you are stressed and completely overworked. Love yourself and everyone living with you and take time out! That is an action which fits your responsibilities. When your neighbor has water in the cellar, clean it up. We need to help the Pakistani people with their flood - and also many others who are struggling right now. That might not be easy - but it will lead us to actions and to long-term strategies. There is a lot to do!

We also need to see that we are not alone in our responsibility. God is there all the time. He feels responsible for all this, and he wants to act using our presence and our hands. He will do his bit, with his surpassing possibilities. Lets move forward in his love and his truth … let us take our responsibility serious! ... more texts
