He is the Lord …

Jesus plays a central role in the New Testament. We have already talked about salvation, about the unbelievable kindness which is addressed in these few sentences. However, there is much more. In verse 10 Paul says:

10 His plan is that at the end of time, everything will be put under the control of Christ, both things on earth and things in heaven.

Everything is put under his control. In the New Testament he is usually called “the Lord”. When the gospels or the letters talk about Jesus, they call him “Lord Jesus” (kurio Iesou). This is much more than a “Mr Jesus”. It is a title, showing his power, his authority, his unique role for this world, for the creation, for the universe.

The claim of the New Testament is far reaching. Jesus is the Lord of everything. He is, already now, the Lord. He can do what ever he wants. But currently, his main task is still salvation, kindness. He waits, he calls, he collects. But he will restore justice. He will restore it with great power. That is the vision and the promise of the bible. As “the Lord” everything will be put under his control.

Is he your Lord? …

Being “the Lord” has a global meaning. But it also has a very personal meaning. Is Jesus “my Lord” in the sense that he controls my life? Do I really want to lead my life according to him, under his control? That is a key question for me. Why should I lead a life under his control?

The question of personal control is one of the key questions of faith. Asking why he should control me, is a key question which can only be answered by insight into God's character, into truth and justice, into love and solidarity, into his existence and my own existence. When I discover that he is good, and that I am not good without him, then I am at a point where I can trust my life into his hands!
