Mentoring ...

Thursday, Feb 23, 2012. Have you ever heard of mentoring? A mentor is a person which has some kind of experience in a field and helps another person to get more experience.

Mentor and Mentee …

A mentor is a “friend” and “father”, someone who is willing to offer time and wisdom. Mentoring can be helpful in many areas. I have been taking part in a mentoring program over the past 12 month which was offered by my employer. Over 12 month I had various meetings with an older colleague with a lot of experience in our governmental institution.

The mentoring program was accompanied by various seminars and tutorials. The idea was to teach young leaders all they need to carry out their job efficiently. To this end, we got courses on the rules which govern our employment activities, for example. You need to know public law when you deal with positions and people.

When you are an adult person, being a mentee does not mean that you would not know a lot already. It is a one-to-one relationship which is often on the same level! But still, one might have more experiences in some field, the other one in another. And it can be fantastic to have this type of relationship, to learn further and build your network!

Christian Mentoring …

In the Christian life mentoring can be a quite helpful thing as well. Currently we are building up some mentoring scheme in our church. Mentoring is quite biblical, Paul was a mentor for several of the writers of the New Testament. He guided them through the beginnings of faith, until they themselves could pass on the gospel with wisdom and authority.

The best thing in mentoring is that you build a friendship. There is someone, who you know that he wants your best. He will be honest. He will be kind. He will help, but also you can know that he will tell you honestly all the difficulties he sees. But he does not want to discourage, but to encourage!

And a good Christian mentor will always try to connect you with God. He will give you encouragement to pray, to search the Lord, to read his word and understand it by putting it into action. Christian mentors will pray for you and with you. I believe that God blesses mentors and mentees, just because he promised that whereever there are two in his name, he will be with them.
