Sort Myself ...

Monday, July 30, 2012. The consulting business has been constantly growing over the past 50 years. Companies give advice to other companies. A consultant is someone who looks at some business processes, he knows the environment and the field, and he then gives advice how the enterprise can be restructured. He has a suggestion how the goals can be met in a better, a more efficient, a more successful way.

How can I get advice? …

Often I think, we need consulting also on the personal level. We would need a consultant to help us through our choices in school, though the choices after school, where we pick a place to study or to learn some business. We also need advice when we continue, for our choices within our business. Who is giving us good advice? Where are the independent consultants, who do not have particular interests themselves?

We need advice for our business decisions, but also on other levels of our life. We need advice for insurances. What insurances do we need, which company and offer should we take? There are not many independent consultants in the business, and those who claim to be independent mainly pick the product for which they themselves get the most benefit when you choose it. But we also need to rent an appartment or buy a house. How do we get advice here? Where do we put our money? Do we save for some years or do we spend most of it for current needs? Where is someone giving us good and independent advice?

There is the personal level. Sometimes we have trouble with family. We might have some problems with our partner. We might be frustrated about some things, perhaps our own behaviour, our own weaknesses. Where do we get advice? Where do we get someone who can give us a friendly and independent opinion? Who knows about possibilities and consequences?

Faith life …

Where do we get advice in our faith life? Perhaps we are interested in faith, but do not know what to believe and how to believe. Where do we get some advice which is not limited to a very particular view? What denomination or church might be the right one for us? Who teaches the truth? Catholic or Lutheran, Anglican or some free evangelical church? Charismatic or classical?

What is the role of faith in my life? How do I sort my thoughts and my feelings, my mind and my heart? Usually, our basic idea about life also influences our decisions and our business. What is my way in all of this? Some of us think about going into full-time service or into mission. What is our way? How do we hear what the Lord wants to tell us? How do we listen to his guidance?

Over the coming two weeks we will talk about all these questions. We will talk about how guidance might come. We will explore various tools which we can use, and also talk about mistakes we can make. It will be an exciting time of sorting ourselves over the summer! (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
