Change and Healing ...

Wednesday, Aug 15, 2012. How long does it take for some wound to heal? How long does it take for some cold to heal? How long does it take for some other particular illness to heal?

Loosing weight, sorting finances, etc …

When you want to loose weight, it is nothing you could do in just some days. Try to eat less - your body tries to keep his weight as a measure of protection, and you will not loose much initially. It is an important point to change your eating habits to loose weight and stay on a lower level than before. You could say that healing in this particular area of over-weight needs to address our habits and way of life.

When you spend too much money, this is a similar thing. Often, we run into financial difficulties when our monthly income does not match our monthly expenses. That is another type of illness, and it needs healing by a change of our habits as well. As with the over-weight it needs a consistent and long-term approach. First you need to work out what you really need to spend. Then, you need to develop habits which fit your income. When you do this, everything will be well, and you will see your finances flourish and be fine.

We can see that there are many things in our life which we can influence, but they are dependent on habits and customs, on our life-style, on our way of life. With some smart measures, we are able to control things. It is not hard, but we need to know the tricks and we need to develop our habits actively.

God's change with us …

An interesting observation when reading the New Testament is that the apostles also address our habits again and again. When we grow into a “life in Christ” - life as a believer - we also need to work on our habits. Egoism is a habit, continuing behaviour, which is like an illness and needs treatment. But it is dependent on our decisions, on our will, on our actions. Actions which are repeated again and again become a habit and then develop into character features …

God wants us to develop habits which fit his kingdom. These are habits of truth, habits of reliability, habits of love and patience and friendliness. These habits need decisions on our side, decisions again and again, such that they become habits. We need to want this and do it, day by day.

We might not be able to succeed when we are alone. We need his help and we need the company of other Christians, who want to go the same way. The church - as an active community of Christians - is needed here, desperately needed. And we need community with the Lord in prayer, also on a daily basis. His spirit can give us the strength we need, the motivation we need, the insight we need! (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
