Living in truth ...

Wednesday, Oct 24, 2012. What does “full truth” mean, when it comes to life? It is an interesting question! How do I live “in truth”? What has my life to do with truth?

Past, Future, Potential, Consideration, Fears …

Let us try to formulate what “living in truth” could mean. Someone lives in truth, if he does not lie or cheat. Someone lives in truth if what he says and how he behaves completely fits to who he is. But who are we? How much is our past part of what we are? How much is our future part of what we are?

Are you living in truth, if you are not developing the potential which is in you? If you hide your wishes, your desires, your possibilities - is that truth? Living in truth must have to do with living up to your possibilities as well! Does it mean you follow your desires completely, though? What about discipline? What about justice? What about consideration and respect? It seems there needs to be a balance between desires and justice, between desires and respect! That is part of “truth” as well.

What about my fears? Is it not part of living in truth to be aware of my fears? But: do I know my fears? Many of us try to push fears away, sometimes without even realizing this. But if I do not know myself, can I be true about myself? If I am hidden to myself, if my feelings only occur occasionally, that is not full truth which I would be able to live.

Living in Jesus …

We have already talked about Jesus, who calls himself “the truth”. Living in truth would mean “living in Jesus”. In fact, that is the way the New Testament talks about faith. Coming to faith means going through a door, which leads you to a life in the Holy Spirit, a life “in Jesus”. That sounds like an image, and of course it is an image, but it is also reality and has many consequences and very concrete things where you can learn what living in truth means.

One key point of “living in truth” means that in interaction with God I discover myself. That mans I discover all my potential, but also all the evil things in my sould and my mind. Before God, I cannot hide and there is no need to hide. In Jesus, I am completely forgiven and completely accepted. Here, I can start to look at myself without any cheating, without defense at the wrong place, without any limitations! That is great and terrifying at the same time …

But God also wants me to discover all the potential which he has placed in me. That can be fantastic and wonderful. It can also be challenging, since it might mean that I start things which I never thought I would be able to do. Living in truth here means to be “in him” and discover his plans as well - plans of truth with creation and mankind, plans for now and plans for eternity! (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
