What when trust is gone? ...

Wednesday, Nov 7, 2012. We have been starting to think about solid ground for our activities, for our life, for our plans and targets. Recently I realized, that “trust” is strongly related to it. But here is the whole story …

Knowledge, Insight and Trust …

I want to talk about some institute or company, and about a complex task in this institute. Today, every high-tech company has such tasks. You cannot build a car without many different divisions in your company, which have to work together and set up efficient and lean production processes. Every complex software development today needs different working groups to work together. They need leaders who know the needs of the different parts. And they need trust between the different groups and the different people.

It is interesting to see, that both knowledge and insight and trust need to come together for something to work. If insight is missing, you will not get far. If one group does not understand the other group, their work will not fit to what the others need to either work towards them or to use what they generate. And in all of it: if one group tries to work against another, if there are conflicts of competence or conflicts about ressources, then it might be difficult.

Without a minimum of trust between the workers, they will not be able to succeed. When one group has the impression, that the others want to keep them out and basically work for their own good only, not for the whole process, then the whole process is in significant danger. It will not work, – or it will work but badly!

Basis for Trust …

What is the basis for trust? In our company, the basis for trust needs to be established by actions on all levels. It is, in the first place, a leadership issue. When the leader does not work towards trust, all ist lost anyway. You will not be able to change the whole thing, when leadership fails! But of course, it is also needed that the individuals put their share in, that they work towards trust and honesty. Part of trust is to give and to take.

One key story of the New Testament talks about the basis of trust. It is the cross where Jesus dies. It is a sign of trust, since he dies for his enemies. He wants to establish trust. He gives something for them - something big and valuable. He gives his life, a life which is just and pure. He gives it to show: you can trust me, I love you, I want to help you, I will not let you down!

God has thought about trust and has come up with Jesus. His answers address this question: how do I get a solid ground? And in everything Jesus does, he shows that he is trustworthy, culminating in his death and resurrection. We can learn from this. We can believe in it. And we can be influenced and changed by him and by what he did, we can take it up and follow him with all we do. That is a good way to regain trustworthiness and trust! When trust is gone, we should go to Jesus. (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
