Can we make things better? …

We can work on improvements of our environment, of our world, on many levels. Some try to do good business - and that might improve the world as well. If you have great products for an affordable price, I would say it is part of “making the world a better place”. But of course, it is only one little part of it.

There are those of us who are working towards understanding. That can be a matter of decisions. You want to integrate some people - and work towards it. But sometimes it can be tough! When you see how different people are and how different the goals are, which some try to reach, you might even think that by no means understanding can be achieved.

There are many steps which can be gone to improve our environment. In democratic countries we have found institutional ways to justice, with courts and lawyers. We have found a way to moderate power, by elections (with all difficulties which we have with these, since money is a driving force in some of our elections as well). And we have established the power of free media, which are allowed to express political opinions freely!

What Jesus says …

**

Is it good to long for a better world? Jesus himself has expressed this in the beatitudes in Matthew 5, 6: Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. The hunger and the thirst for a better world is part of this longing for righeousness.

The answer which the New Testament gives us is first a righteousness which is given to the believer by faith and in faith. Jesus dies for us at the cross. His death is a death of all the injustice actions, all the impurity, all scandals and all guilt which is part of our existence.

But beyond the purification of our past. Jesus is not only talking about the world which has been, but about the world which is to come. He is talking about a world where heaven is coming to us, which is much better than what we had before. The kingdom of God is starting already, in our heart and in our mind. But it is going to be a mighty force, changing everything what is. (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
