The Song of Songs 1: a Love Song full of Sexuality ...
Monday, Nov 18, 2013. Love and sexuality is one of the most important parts of our life. We want to explore this important part in the next days. We want to learn more, want to explore what the bible has to say about it. Today, we start with a song which can be found in the wisdom literature of the Old Testament, the Song of Solomon. Let us listen to one of the most prominent pieces of the Old Testament.
A love Song …
1 The Song of Songs, which is Solomon’s. 2 She:
Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth! For your love is better than wine;
3 your anointing oils are fragrant; your name is oil poured out; therefore virgins love you. 4 Draw me after you; let us run. The king has brought me into his chambers. Others: We will exult and rejoice in you; we will extol your love more than wine; rightly do they love you. 5 She: I am very dark, but lovely, O daughters of Jerusalem, like the tents of Kedar, like the curtains of Solomon. 6 Do not gaze at me because I am dark, because the sun has looked upon me. My mother’s sons were angry with me; they made me keeper of the vineyards, but my own vineyard I have not kept! 7 Tell me, you whom my soul loves, where you pasture your flock, where you make it lie down at noon; for why should I be like one who veils herself beside the flocks of your companions? 8 He: If you do not know, O most beautiful among women, follow in the tracks of the flock, and pasture your young goats beside the shepherds’ tents. 9 I compare you, my love, to a mare among Pharaoh’s chariots. 10 Your cheeks are lovely with ornaments, your neck with strings of jewels. 11 Others: We will make for you ornaments of gold, studded with silver. 12 She: While the king was on his couch, my nard gave forth its fragrance. 13 My beloved is to me a sachet of myrrh that lies between my breasts. 14 My beloved is to me a cluster of henna blossoms in the vineyards of Engedi. 15 He: Behold, you are beautiful, my love; behold, you are beautiful; your eyes are doves. 16 She: Behold, you are beautiful, my beloved, truly delightful. Our couch is green; 17 the beams of our house are cedar; our rafters are pine. What is man? … **
What is man? What is it that constitutes humanity? Here, we find important elements of humanity. The relationship between a man and a woman is in the core of humanity, it is in the core of what makes humans what they are. How could we live without this type of relationship? We would not have been born without sexuality. And a loving relationship which also includes physical attraction is deeply rooted in our souls!
Women are attractive. They are beautiful. Man are attractive. They are beautiful. Humans have fantastic bodies. They have fantastic shapes. Beauty is a feature of all parts of our body, of our heads, our arms, our legs, our waistline. Humans are fantastic beings, and we are made to explore this in a much deeper sense than just looking at it from a remote position. Within the relationship of a man and a woman we are made to come much closer to each other, to get into intimate contact.
The song of songs takes us into a wonderful and breathtaking part of humanity. God himself has created love and sexuality as expression of his own love and the intimate relationship which he wants to have with us. (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
