A great story! ...

Thursday, April 10, 2014. Imagine you see the earth from the moon: a fantastic blue ball in the middle of a dark universe, only covered with the light of the stars. The earth is evolving, as is the whole universe. As in a time-lapse you see the animals appearing, you see the human history. But imagine, you can also see it in slow motion, observe each detail in full constrast. Each individual piece …

History close and far …

Imagine you are able to have two perspectives at the same time. One is the remote perspective, you see all things from far away. You see the different tribes which start to grow into nations. You see the wars which come and go. You see the first cultures in the middle east and in the Americas.

Imagine you also have the close perspective. You are there with the people. Any time you can be there in the middle of them, listen to what they say. You are able to feel what they feel, to think what they think, no thought is hidden before you. You can even sense the chemistry of the bodies, you know their blod pressure and their enzymes, everything. But you can switch, you are also far away …

Imagine you are beyond time. You can see what happens to David around 1000BC. You can see the enlightement and the modern industrial era. You can see the Roman empire, and the people of Israel in Egypt. Imagine you can see it all, time is not your limit. Then you might have a little glimpse into what is possible for God, for the Lord of all.

At the beginning and now …

Today, let us look into a fantastic story, which we are taken into by the gospel of John, chapter 1. The evangelist John takes us into this global perspective: the perspective of creation. The perspective of the very beginning. He then moves into a very concrete situation, his perspective is jumping right into a particular time and location: Palestine around 30 AD, John the Baptist at the Jourdan river.

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. 4 In him was life,1 and the life was the light of men. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. 6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. 8 He was not the light, but came to bear witness about the light. 9 The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world.

John talks about “the word” which is there at the beginning. The word is another term which is used for Jesus in the gospel of John, as it ca be seen from verses 29 onward. Calling Jesus “the word” (logos) means something like: God is speaking through him. He is God's communication, God's messanger. He is God himself talking to us, coming to us. John the evangelist talks about the true light, about Jesus, who gives light to everyone. “Light” is another image used for Jesus. Jesus is coming into the world. (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
