God to be my focus ...
Tuesday, July 8, 2014. There are so many things which can cause sorrows. We are dependent on other people, on our partner, on our work environment. We are dependent on others when it comes to the things we do day by day. But what should be our focus, where do we want encouragement to come from?
Only God is Faithful …
The marriage of a friend of ours broke down after 20 years. She had focussed mainly on the family and the kids - and now everything seems to break into pieces! What is it that holds in your life? Where is the encouragement, where is the love and appreciation, which we need, coming from?
When you take your main positive feedback from your professional activities, you are also vulnerable to things happening there. I have written scientific papers for many years, have earned grants, citations and got a professorship. Yet, still it hurts me, when colleages write nasty things about my most recent publications into their reports - when they do not understand what type of innovation I try to work towards. People can be so violating in their choice of words and in their judgement!
By the way, even when you work in public service, in a medical environment or in the church, you might be faced with similar experiences. When you are a leader, and suddenly there are some people who do not like you, who have difficulties with your style and they go against you. You try to do well, but you do not succeed. Then you have to ask yourself: what is your life based on?
He wants to be our center! …
The only person in this world who is completely faithful is the Lord himself. It is God in father, son and holy spirit. We can rely on him. He loves us deeply and he does not let us down! I believe that the Lord can do much more good in our life, than other people can do evil. And that he can help us, he can give what we do not get from humans. He will be there to support us, where others fail. In 2nd Thessalonians, the apostle writes:
And pray that we may be delivered from wicked and evil people, for not everyone has faith. 3 But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one. 4 We have confidence in the Lord that you are doing and will continue to do the things we command. 5 May the Lord direct your hearts into God’s love and Christ’s perseverance. (2 Thessalonians 3: 2-5)
In the Lord, we have a chance to do well. In the Lord, we will be protected. There are still all those things which hurt us. But there is healing coming from the most high, and there is his mighty hand in our life, day by day. Let us find the center of our life in him. Let us take all the encouragement we need from him. Let us not make ourselves dependent on the applause of other people, but on his love, on his faithfulness and on his word. Lord, come and be our source, today and tomorrow and forever!
