Whom to Trust? ...
Friday, Jan 23, 2015. Who can you rely on? It is quite an important question. Whom to trust? Whom to rely on? There are, unfortunately, enough people you cannot fully trust. Think about the behaviour of the people you know: what is it you can rely on?
Whom to rely on? …
Most of us work in some larger environment, with units and sections and divisions and companies and institutions. There are those who are in charge of some of the parts, and usually you need to work together. You have to provide some input or product to some divisions, and you get some services or products from other divisions. This all works through a lot of communication, through contracts, through orders and either money or other tools of payment or compensation.
When you want to do something, build something, develop something, you need to trust people. You need to rely on what they say, and what they do. There is also the competition for some of the ressources. And there are many personalities involved in the process. Many humans. Many characters. Many personal goals and personal histories. It is all us humans!
Whom to rely on? Whom to trust? Is it the big leaders which will help to make everything to be good? Is it the princes and rulers, who can bring justice and balance into this system? Who is it who is in power? Who is it to make the important decisions? In this situation, Psalm 146 comes and gives us a big warning, and important input. Please read!
Put not your trust in princes! …
1 Praise the Lord! Praise the Lord, O my soul! 2 I will praise the Lord as long as I live; I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. 3 Put not your trust in princes, in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. 4 When his breath departs, he returns to the earth; on that very day his plans perish. 5 Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob, whose hope is in the Lord his God, 6 who made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, who keeps faith forever; 7 who executes justice for the oppressed, who gives food to the hungry. The Lord sets the prisoners free; 8 the Lord opens the eyes of the blind. The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down; the Lord loves the righteous. 9 The Lord watches over the sojourners; he upholds the widow and the fatherless, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. 10 The Lord will reign forever, your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the Lord! (Psalm 146)
It is an interesting idea, which the song writer gives us as input to our decisions and planning processes. Ultimately, it is not the princes and rules, not the heads and division leaders, not the CEOs or owners who are important. It is not good to put too much trust in their role. It is not good to put trust into their decisions, into them as people. They are also weak. They are as human as every other human, with strength and with strong weaknesses. They cannot save you.
The psalm does not neglect the responsibility of leadership. It does not neglect responsibility at all. It just draws our attention to the role of the living God in all of this. Ultimately, it is the Lord who is in power. It is the Lord who is eternal. It is the Lord who can save and help and heal. It is the Lord, not humans. You need to put your trust into him.
