The Community of Love and Truth ...
Thursday, Jan 21, 2016. What is it that humans need and want? What is it that you desire? All humans need someone who cares about them. They need love for their life. And they need to rely on others, to know that they tell the truth and that they are truthful towards them. We all long for this. We need people who do what they say, who keep their word, their promises. Human community needs it, and we need it on a personal level!
The Invitation …
Here is the good news: God is like this. God in father, son and holy spirit. It is non-trivial news. But God is love. God is truth. God is reliable action. It is a real statement, a claim, in its reality comparable to our statement of natural laws. It is, of course, no law, since it is a statement about a living being, not a machine. But God is there, and he is truthful, pure and reliable. He is love, forgiveness and kindness!
There is more good news: God invites all of us - you and me - to this community. We are invited to take part in his community of love and truthfulness. We are invited to be there, appreciated and loved. We are invited to take part, to be served and to serve. This service is not one-directional. It goes back and fourth. He serves you, and you serve him. Like love is, where everyone gives and receives - without counting the numbers, minutes or values. Love loves to give. And it is open to receive.
Looking into the story of King Solomon and how he built the Jewish temple in about 950BC, we hear about this love of God. Already there, about 1000 years before Jesus lived, God's love and faithfulness was clearly proclaimed. And they could be experienced. Let us hear how Solomon prayed:
You spoke and Fulfilled
“O Lord, God of Israel, there is no God like you, in heaven or on earth, keeping covenant and showing steadfast love to your servants who walk before you with all their heart, 15 who have kept with your servant David my father what you declared to him. You spoke with your mouth, and with your hand have fulfilled it this day. (2 Chronicles 6, 14-15)
It is good to know that God is good. David experienced it, and the first books of the bible are full of the goodness of the Lord. And Solomon experienced it. And we find his goodness in full measure in the New Testament, when the Christian church comes into full existence, when the Jewish belief is fully opened to all mankind. God's forgiveness culminates in the cross, which merges judgment and forgiveness, anger about evil with love and kindness.
God is real. The holy spirit is real. His love is real. We can come to him, any moment of our life, by simple prayer. We can just turn, where ever we are, and address him, let him in, experience his light in our own life, here and now. Try it, pray to him, to be with you, to guide you, to fill and help you, to serve you and to let you serve. We are invited to become a blessing in his truth and love, today and every day.
