Wednesday, April 1, 2009. We talk about the cross of Jesus. It is a symbol of justice, a symbol of the pain of victims of all generations.

Jesus's cross is a symbol of judgement. God judges all the crime and guilt of the world. There is no other judgment than death for many crimes committed by men. The cruelty of torture, murders and wars, ignorance, missing help in life threatening moments … how could God not see and be angry about the behaviour of mankind.

But the cross is not only a symbol of judgement. It is also a symbol of foregiveness. “Who ever believes in him, is free of guilt!” That is the message of the New Testament. Since Jesus is judged for the sin of the world, everyone who accepts this as capital judgement, is free of his guilt before God. “There is no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus” (Romans 8,1) says the apostle Paul in his letter to the Romans. The cross is a symbol of foregiveness, of mercy, of new life!

The new life which God gives through the cross is symbolized in the resurrection. Jesus did not stay dead - he came to life after three days. God's mercy is not empty, but filled with new hope, with new possibilities, with a new life! The symbol of pain becomes a symbol of hope. Things can become completely new on the background of total loss - this is a hope for everyone of us daily. It is God's power in our life, not only a distant part of history, but a living hope coming from the living God today! [R.W.E.P., jesusnetwork.eu]
