Wednesday, April 15, 2009. What are the basic questions today, which could draw us to faith? Who is more likely to ask for God? Who wants to know who Jesus is? Who are the people of our time who want to come to faith?

I do not think that there were times when many more people wanted to know what faith is about. It seems that there were times when churches had more members. But that was to a large extent a purely social phenomenon. People have been forced to be church members in medieval times. People then stayed church members due to social reasons. It seems a majority of humans adjusts to social pressure - independent of the direction. It has always been a very personal question: do you believe in Jesus? And this question always had important consequences - in times where the church took the “official” lead or in times where the church did not play a big role. (Of course, times of persecution made it particularly difficult to live with faith.)

People who are rather young or rather old are more likely to ask for God. Teens try to develop their own way through life. They ask who God is and how they should relate to him. Teens! Jesus is yours! He wants you. But also when people get older they remember the basic questions of life. They start to ask for God. They learn that life has an end. Thinking about the end can lead us to Jesus. In fact, everyone could and should ask for God. We are stupid if we don't do it. We are blind and short-sighted if we do not look for God! He can be found in Jesus. [R.W.E.P., jesusnetwork.eu]
