Science and Faith

Monday, April 20, 2009. We live in a world full of science. This means that we try to understand the world we live in and this understanding strongly influences our society. Our understanding is based on laws and rules. We observe nature and then try to find regularities, patterns, repetitive behavior. Our mind seems to be very well prepared for finding regular patterns of natural activity. Science usually denotes the complete set of behavior, people, institutions and results which are involved in understanding and influencing our world.

Christian faith is concerned with understanding our world as well - but this understanding is usually on a different level than science. Faith does not try to understand how exactly some observable event functions. Faith does not try to analyze the natural laws which cause the event or guide its components. But it tries to understand the overall framework of this event. It tries to understand the world in its relation to God, its creator. Christian faith talks about Jesus and his special role in this creation. Faith claims that the natural laws of this world are embedded into the purpose given by its creator. Faith tries to bring me into contact and into a living relationship with the God and creator of this world.

My goal for the next days is to explore the relation between faith and science a little bit more - and also talk about the scientist and his faith. As a scientist today: is it possible to believe and what does it mean? Where are the problems of faith today? What can we hope? What do we gain? We will enter an interesting and fascinating discussion. [R.W.E.P., jesusnetwork.eu]
