Faith in Action - Change ...

Friday, August 14, 2009. “Faith in Action” touches important basic questions. How do we live faith? What do we do when we believe in Jesus, in God? Today we have added another keyword: “change”. How does faith influence how we change?

Our world is in a strong process of change. We call it “globalization” today. Most business processes, most scientific processes, films and culture - everything is global today. Our cars come from Japan, Germany or France. Our films are made in California. Our printers and computers come from Korea. Garment is made in China. Petrol comes from the Saudi Arabia and Kuwait. Gas from Russia. Scientific results are generated everywhere on the world, in highly distributed international teams. Change is where ever we go. Do we need more change? All the global change is so strongly influencing our daily life, that often we had enough change. We would rather calm down a little bit, get some steady flow into our life …

Faith will change our life. Faith changes the way we think, the way we talk, the way we act - and it changes the way we change! The driving force of change in the world is competition, it is the desire for power, for ressources, for money. The driving force for the Christian change is the motivating joy and love of the Holy Spirit. The driving force for Christian change is the love of God! This is a different type of change. It is on another level, and it has different goals. It does not necessarily contradict business change - in fact it will also trigger change in the way we do business and will influence the decisions we make. But it starts in a different region of our life. It starts in our key motivations, in the way we see ourselves and think about us and about the world.

Change itself is not good or bad. Change is just change. We need to have a look into the things change is working on. Modifications may be good if something bad is given up and something good is constructed. Sometimes this might be difficult to judge. There are disadvantages and advantages. We need to put some wheights on different advantages and balance them with the disadvantages.

The change of faith works like this. Here, the positive things are strongly linked to the character of God himself, to the life in his kingdom, to the way the Holy Spirit lives in us. Justice, appreciation, solidarity, dedication, love, joy and peace are key qualities linked to the Holy Spirit. It is a great change if we can move into this world of God, if we start to be influenced by his amazing character. It is a change which is truely worth it!

When we believe in Jesus, we will be open to change. We realize that we should not stay as we are. That is one of the key signs of maturity: people start to be self-critical in a balanced way. They can listen to criticism. They are open to improve, to be changed. They know that they are loved by God, deeply loved, but that God does not love them because they are perfect, but just as they are with all their imperfections, with all their problems, with all their guilt and all their failures. They are loved and because of this deep love they gain the freedom to change, to improve, to be transformed into something different. There is no rule of the form “first change, then be loved”. It is rather “you are loved, you are free to change”. In the light of God we will be changed, there is no doubt about this. Change is a part of faith in action … ... more texts
