Goals! I want to be relevant ...

Friday, Jan 7, 2011. We are talking about our goals and plans for the year 2011 and beyond. Today, we start with some very important point: being relevant.

Relevance and how we try to reach it …

In fact, every human wants to be relevant for other people. We are born to be relevant. We are made to be relevant. I do not know anyone who does not want to be relevant.

Some people try to be relevant by reaching high goals. That is one of the patterns of our society. We honor the world record holders. We talk about Olympic medals. There are world championships and national chapionships all the time. To be relevant you need to be on top, you need to win. Relevance here is measured by being ahead of the crowd.

Other people try to be relevant by having important positions in politics or society. The chancellor is relevant. The ministers are relevant. The leaders of political parties or important institutions are relevant. That is what we believe: relevance is given by the importance of the role we have in society.

Other people try to be relevant by creating great pieces of art or music. We try to change the history of our society or of the whole human culture. Those companies, who created breakthrough products are considered to be relevant.

We are relevant for God! …

There is another idea of relevance. God has different ideas. Our role in society is not crucial for him. Our status is not important in his eyes. Relevance is not given by our success or our job description.

I think that God considers our ideas of relevance to be quite childish. He might even consider them to be a sign of a deep illness. We are not able to see what is really important. We are not able to see his presence, the relevance which is given by him and can be found in him alone.

We are relevant for God. He loves every person, the least one not less than the important ones. He gives relevance, since we are relevant for the strongest power in the universe. When God considers someone to be relevant, he or she really IS relevant. And since he loves you, he loves the least person on the planet, you are relevant and everyone is very relevant.
