Sudden Death ...

Monday, Oct 10, 2011. Recently we had to experience a heavy death in our environment. The wife of a friend suddenly died. In the morning she was ok, in the evening she was dead. Suddenly taken out of the middle of her life. What a horror …! We are still shocked.

Life is Threatened …

The event brings us back to our true situation. Life is always threatened. Life is valuable, but also quite finite. It can be so vivid, so lifely, so fantastic. But every day there are people dying in car accidents. There are ill-nesses which bring us down. And there are natural reasons why our life ends.

Death is not nice. Death is the large threat to all our activities, to all our feelings. Death kills, it terminates, it ends.

There is no way around death. We can try to make our life longer. We can try to avoid death in the middle of our life, can try to have better cure for various illnesses. That is all reasonable and natural. But we cannot beat death, we might just be able to delay it a little bit. There is no way around death!

God's Perspective …

The Christian view onto death is different from a view which is purely within the world. Jesus has beaten death. He has been risen, and for everyone who believes in him, there is the perspective of eternal life. That will still experience the death of our bodies. We still need to let go, all our plans with this world end, all our posessions go to others, all what we are will be transformed and changed. But there is another perspective …!

God's perspective is different from our worldly perspective. Eternal life is a fact for him, for us it might be just a hope, which is difficult to grasp. But there is life beyond this complete limit which we have within this world, there is a life beyond death in a new creation. There is Jesus, the one who talks to us through the New Testament. He is there already, and will bring us all home.

Of course, death is still something which completely disturbs all our usual activities. It is still a large disruptor of any view which is focused on worldly plans. But it ultimate sting is gone. It is not true that this life would be all we have. There is him, the eternal God, who belongs to us and we to him forever! (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
