Heavy Burden ...

Thursday July 19, 2012. It is summer time and many of us are on holidays. But that means that the others, who have stayed at home, need to do more work. There are enough jobs where work cannot wait … and when someone is missing, the others are in trouble!

Carrying our burden …

You might be like the responsible doctor, who suddenly has to take care of twice as many patients as normal. He does not manage to do all what is needed - there is now way. The management of the clinic does not pay attention. And the burden seems to be getting heavier every day.

But there are many other burdens which we carry. A friend of mine lost his job, and he is now trying to get back into something useful which makes sense for him. It is quite a burden, put onto him. He can take a job in another town, with weekly commuting, being separated from the family. He can change his job and go from a well-paid management environment to a low-paid social job. Is that a path he should take? Reducing your expenses to 50% is quite a challenge!

There is another friend, who is suffering from mental problems now for many years. Life is not stable. Trying to find into a normal life, alcohol problems, break down, volatile times with ups and downs, with euphoric days and days of misery come and go. I would call it a heavy burden … one which cannot just be quit or put down!

“My burden is light” …

One of the key sentences of Jesus comes to my mind again and again “My burden is light”. Is that a way which we can take? Is it done by decision? How to get into it? It is a way of faith, … so without faith in him you cannot go it. But how do you practically move onto it? The passage is from the gospel of Matthew, chapter 11:

28 “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 30 For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”

I believe that there are two main points here. One is that we indeed need to get into faith, we need to get into a state of life, where we are completely living with him and “in him”. We come to him. But there is a second point. When we carry our burdens, as Christians or as Non-Christians, we can come to him and ask him for help. He will help. He will lighten our burden. He will give us advice and things to do, but his burden is light, we can carry it. He gives us the strength to go the way he has given us. This is quite a promise: ask, and it will be given to you.
