Be you in public ...

Friday, Feb 8, 2013. Do you know people privatly who are standing in the public? For example, do you know one of the politicians, who are talking on a national scale - or perhaps in your local parliament? Have you realized how different people can appear publically and privately?

Is it possible to be you publically? …

Often, the image that comes through the media is different from the image that you get of someone who is standing there with you in the same room. When you listen to Angela Merkel, the German chancellor, for example, in the media she usually appears quite unhandy. But when you are in the middle of a discussion with her within her party, that is completely different. She can be full of wit and quick on the trigger.

Often, you know someone as a quite honest and sincere person - and then suddenly he is in the middle of a shitstorm in the media, which does not fit him at all. But the public does not care. Things are not just and often the reports are not reporting facts, but narratives which are just not true. We could observe this several times this week: false reports about statements which have never been done. So people can appear quite differently in the media than they are in reality. Media report false statements, then others talk about the false statement and an image is created about someone, which does not fit.

Is it possible to be you in public? Is it possible to communicate how you really are? It is difficult! Media need to reduce communication, they need to get through with short messages, with exaggeration.

How Jesus is …

The New Testament describes Jesus and his public work. How has he appeared to others in public? At the cross, he appeared to be the criminal, who was punished for riot. When he was presented to Pilate, he appeared to be the big pretender, who claimed to be God, but could not help himself. He was the big leader, who attracted thousands of people to heal them. It is a quite opalescent picture, which comes to us through the gospels today.

But we also learn a lot about the way Jesus was in privat. The chats with the disciples are reported. Jesus seems to step out of the book and talk to us still today, in a quite direct and private way. When he talked to the woman, who was accused of adultery, he talked to her privately, and we are taken into this privat communication by the New Testament.

From all we know, Jesus was quite himself in public. He was the same, when he talked to a single person, as he was when he addressed the crowd. The New Testament insists on this: he is the same yesterday, today and tomorrow. He is trustworthy. And we can get to know him, when we search him in the scriptures. ... more texts
