The Servant King ...

Wednesday, March 20, 2013. Jesus is the servant king. That is something which is extremely important and crucial for all of us. Let us try to understand. Let us try to explore what it means for us, for our communities, for mankind!

Servant King Explored …

God comes to us - that is one of the nearly unbelievable facts reported by the biblical books. But more than that: the creator of the universe becomes man, and lives among us. The story of Christmas is about a little child. It is about the king of heaven, who comes as a baby boy. He comes weak and vulnerable, just as humans are.

And then, he learns to serve. He learns to live an ordinary life. He does not live in wealth, not in a castle, not with many people admiring him. For 30 years, a full life, he lives just in an ordinary way, with all the difficulties which humans have. The king of heaven is the guy next door!

Jesus starts his ministry when he is about 30. He starts to preach about the kingdom of heaven. For three years he spreads his message, calls disciples, builds up the basis for his church. Then, he dies at the cross. His death is brought unto him for what he is: the one who shows God. He is punished for the truth.

Servant King as Template …

**

Jesus is our template. He came to show how God is and what God wants. He brings all the value which humans have, which God put into mankind. We try to be high or good or rich. But he shows us that we are poor when we look at life that way. We are extremely poor, when we forget the majesty which God put into every single life, independent from achievements and possessions.

Jesus invites us to join his kingdom. He comes to bring faith, to bring new life. He comes to bring life which is no longer following delusive goals, but he wants us to follow the truth. Only the eternal God can be this truth, since everything else is created. Humans are created in his image.

We are called to be kings like Jesus. We are called to be kids of heaven. We are called to discover the majesty which he put into us already. By faith and through faith in him we open this treasure. But remember: faith itself is a gift, which we cannot earn, but receive!

More and more I have discovered the beauty of the servant king. More and more I have realized over the past 20 years, how true he is, how great he is, how wonderful. By being the servant king, he openes a path for us personally as well as for our communities. (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
