Get rid of things ...

Thursday, Jan 16, 2014. Sometimes, it is important to get rid of things. We tend to carry things with us, which come from our past. Perhaps these are some activities. Perhaps these are categories in our mind. Perhaps things we think we need to do.

Past and Future …

We had a discussion recently about the topic between men and women. Some man have grown up with a style where the mother did all the household, and the man brought in the money. They are used to it, and either as a woman or man today, they still stick to this type of distribution of the workload, even if now both work and both earn the money. But that cannot remain the same!

But the past can be active in us in many layers of our life. Perhaps you have worked on some particular problems in the past, and then changed the employer. Now, you need to change your topics and also you cannot ignore the changes in your responsibilities, your environment and much more … But you still stick to the past?

It is possible that things which hurt us inthe past are still present. Perhaps they come into our mind day by day, even hour by hour? Or they are there without our knowledge, but they influence our dreams, the way we approach problems. They might influence us much more than we are aware of.

The Past buried …

The New Testament invites us into something, which strongly influences our past. It is the forgiveness in Christ Jesus. In his death at the cross, we are forgiven all where we failed to follow the purity and holiness of the living God. In his death, we are transformed and renewed. Here, the past is gone, and a new future is opened to us.

Let us look into some bible passages, which indicate this transformation:

Ro 6:8 Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him.

1Co 15:3 For I delivered to you as of first importance what I also received: that Christ died for our sins in accordance with the Scriptures,

Col 2:20 If with Christ you died to the elemental spirits of the world, why, as if you were still alive in the world, do you submit to regulations—

Col 3:3 For you have died, and your life is hidden with Christ in God.

The apostle Paul usually argues like this: you have dies with Christ, your old self is dead. Now you are a new person. Develop into it. Live what you are now. Your life will change, play an active part of this change. It is an interesting way to deal with your past: to bury it in Christ. When we do, we find the power which is in faith. We find the power, which comes from the cross. (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
