I am with you ...

Thursday, Jan 23, 2014. When we talk about faith, we often talk about the many questions which might be unclear or unresolved. But what is it that God first of all wants to tell us? That might, of course, differ from person to person. A living God will tell each person what is important for this particular person at that moment.

God's presence …

One thing which God told many people again and again is this word “I am with you”. God is the God who is there - unseen often, but not less present. He hears everything. He knows all what bothers us. And he can act and will act if we ask him to. A little search shows a whole line of interesting bible passages where God confirms his presence:

Jer 42:11 Do not fear the king of Babylon, of whom you are afraid. Do not fear him, declares the Lord, for I am with you, to save you and to deliver you from his hand.

Jer 46:28 Fear not, O Jacob my servant, declares the Lord, for I am with you. I will make a full end of all the nations to which I have driven you, but of you I will not make a full end. I will discipline you in just measure, and I will by no means leave you unpunished.”

Hag 1:13 Then Haggai, the messenger of the Lord, spoke to the people with the Lord’s message, “I am with you, declares the Lord.”

Hag 2:4 Yet now be strong, O Zerubbabel, declares the Lord. Be strong, O Joshua, son of Jehozadak, the high priest. Be strong, all you people of the land, declares the Lord. Work, for I am with you, declares the Lord of hosts,

Mt 28:20 teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”

Ac 18:10 for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many in this city who are my people.”

Today …

Here, the passage from Matthew is most important. It confirms that Jesus, the risen Jesus, is with his disciples and with all people of faith all the time. His Holy Spirit is there. But also his power, his possibilities, his wonders and his support. Also, his guidance, sometimes a hard hand, sometimes full tailwind. He cares about us!

So when God is with us, it is good to take this into account with all what we do. It is good to talk to him and to listen to him. It is good to pray. He wants to be more than just an insurance institution. He wants to be more than just the last resort when everything fails. He is the living God, the source of life, the beginning and the end. He does not want to be less to us.

Searching God is just good and great. Every day again I realize how fantastic he is, and how important it is for me and my life to have him take the lead. Come, Lord, come! (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
