The image of Jesus as bread …

People have been trying to be with Jesus. Imagine a large crowd of people who tried to follow him, where ever he went. It was difficult for Jesus to get some quiet time, to withdraw and take a time-out to recover. At some point, he uses the situation to explain what happens - in his view. That is quite amazing … read the whole chapter, please. There it is written:

26 Jesus answered them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you are seeking me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate your fill of the loaves. 27 Do not work for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal.” (John 6, 26 ff)

Jesus talks about spiritual food, which he is giving. He even calls himself the food itself. “Eat me”! That is, of course, highly figurative. Jesus shows that he is more than the messanger. He is the message. He is more than someone just reporting. He is the content of the report. He is more than just someone pointing towards God. He IS God.

Our daily bread …

What is your daily bread - your daily spiritual bread? I eat toast and marmelade in the morning. I have my coffee, and then move towards work. But what is my spiritual bread this morning? Often, I take some time to look into the bible and to write some thoughts about what I hear. I try to focus on HIM, though I have to admit that it does not always work the way I would like it to work.

We have to realize that the only source of real spiritual bread is the Lord himself. Only God can give us what we need, day by day. We find it in Jesus. As the disciples in New Testament times. It is still the same story, and will be the same in eternity. He is the beginning and the end!

In the Lords supper we celebrate the unique role which Jesus has. We celebrate his life and his death. We celebrate his resurrection, and the life which he is and which he gives. When we take part, we show that he is our bread, that he is our life! (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
