The Deep Questions II ...

Friday, March 27, 2015. One of the deepest questions we can ask is: what is our life built on? What is it that constitutes who we are? Who or what is making us what we are? What is our fundament - the fundament of our feelings, of our goals, our desires, our hopes, our self-esteem? That is one of the few key questions which every human has to answer.

Do we need an answer? …

Do we really need an answer to the deep question? Perhaps it is just not as important as you tell me! I have my life - why not just do it as I want and leave away these deeper questions. Do I need to become a philosopher or thinker? Perhaps I do not want to be like that?

But everyone of us finds answers to the question. By our choices we give an answer. If we do not want the question, then that is already our special answer to it. We choose what we want to put into the center of our life. Perhaps we want to be focussed on our day to day life. Or we are busy with our company, with our career, with our job? Or we are completely absorbed into caring for our kids. All that is an answer already. Everyone of us is giving answers to the basic question of life!

So we can say that we cannot avoid an answer. The question is only: what type of answer do we give. What is it we build our life on? Is it sustainable? Is it a good choice? Perhaps we try to build our life on an illusion? We try to build it on something which cannot hold us, in the end. Perhaps after 20 or 30 or 40 years we realize that we have been fools - that we put our weight on something which is going to drown in the ocean of life?

Good Choices …

Is there anything in this world which will hold us? You might try with money - and realize that it can be helpful, but can also dissolve itself quicker as you could imagine. Money does not buy friends, nor does it buy love nor truth nor reliability! It is just not an adequate basis for anything.

You could try hard work or performance or achievement. But you will soon realize that even the highest achievement is unknown to many people and is forgotten soon. Also, it does not buy future. It is difficult to conserve appreciation. It does not buy friendship nor truth nor satisfaction nor luck.

You might try friendship to build your life upon. That might be a better choice, though humans are volatile and true friends are hard to find. Too many friendships have stumbled over very small things. And friendship cannot buy you the deep peace and satisfaction which every human desires and needs.

So what is it then you can build your life on? Christians got to know him, the eternal God, who combines truth with love and friendship. He is eternal. He is the beginning and the end. When he comes into our life, things change. They are filled with his purpose, with something we did not know before we meet him. Here, the deep questions find answers - though often different from what we expected. The bible invites us: come! The spirit of God, together with the community of Christians repeats this invitation: come! It is spoken to you and to me … (RWEP) ... more texts
