Clear Words …

37 While Jesus5 was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him, so he went in and reclined at table. 38 The Pharisee was astonished to see that he did not first wash before dinner. 39 And the Lord said to him, “Now you Pharisees cleanse the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside you are full of greed and wickedness. 40 You fools! Did not he who made the outside make the inside also? 41 But give as alms those things that are within, and behold, everything is clean for you. 42 “But woe to you Pharisees! For you tithe mint and rue and every herb, and neglect justice and the love of God. These you ought to have done, without neglecting the others. (Luke 11, 37ff)

Jesus is talking to the Pharisees here. Some of us read the text with the attitude: he is talking to some special religious group 2000 years ago - what does it have to do with me? We might think: “he is criticizing them, not me!” But is it true? When we are doing the same, this criticism also applies to us. When we clean our outside, but do not clean our inside. When we follow rules, but neglect justice and the love of God, then it applies to us as well!

We are asked to live in the love of God. We are asked to acquire the justice of God. We are asked to look into our own life, see that we are on the wrong path and turn around. We are asked to repent. Jesus is telling us, what blessed life is like. In the Sermon on the Mount (Matthew 5-7) we hear about justice, love and truth. We hear about kindness and a pure heart.

I Want to Change …

I myself would like to change - to be changed! I would like to change my attitudes, my goals, the way I approach my life, my work, my friendships, my relationships. I would like to change and fully arrive at this pure heart which Jesus talks about. I would like to build my life and all I do on the justice and love of God.

God offers us his justice in Christ Jesus. In him, we are given full justice. All is done in him. We can approach God. We can be with him. Heaven is open. So we do not need to bring anything, when we come in the name of Jesus. And then, coming to the Lord, we are able to change and to be changed. He is changing our life, our goals, our attitudes. We do not stay the same, when Jesus is in our life!

Exploring life with the Holy Spirit is quite an adventure. It is an adventure, since it means to trust. Trust is not security, it is not control, it is love and kindness which comes to us from the Lord. We let go, we give him the power and the possibilities and the control. He will not let us down. But how can we experience his love when we hold on the steering wheel all the time, when we do not give him the freedom to come with his special love, with his gifts and his kindness?
