Friday, June 16, 2017. Jesus has a special role in the bible. He is the center of the New Testament. The four gospels describe elements from his life. They provide some detail about his passion and death, and then talk about the resurrection. And all the other books also talk about him.
Son of God …
Why is Jesus so special. The message of the New Testament is: he is the son of God. He is God himself who became flesh, who became human. But there is more! He died at the cross to open a door for us. It is about love, about justice, about truth, about forgiveness - deep things which are important for each and every human on the planet.
Through his spirit Jesus stays with Christians - inviting them to live “in him”. It is a daily invitation. It is an invitation in freedom! We still have a choice, and we can do many silly things. But we are urged to live in him, for example by this passage at the end of Hebrews, this monumental letter of the New Testament:
20 Now may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, 21 equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ, to whom be glory forever and ever. Amen. (from Hebrews 13)
His blood …
By the blood of Jesus God made a new and eternal covenant. That is called “New Testament”. It is the covenant that we gain full justice in him and through him. Who believes in him has made it through the final judgement. We gain new life, which is eternal life, it will never cease - even if our body will still die and be transformed.
The teaching of the New Testament is that it needs this death of the innocent to clarify the seriousness of sin, and to establish the door into eternal life. We cannot gain it ourselves, we are stuck in a life which is separated from full love and full justice. But he, Jesus, is not. And he gives it to us.
You might think about this core Christian message. It is something to think about! You might come with many questions. I can only support you to ask, to search, and to take this search serious. When you discover Jesus, you will find fantastic things - and a person and community which is beyond your dreams. We can truly say that him be glory forever, since he deserves it. Come and see!
