The World of Prayer II: my needs.

Tuesday, July 7, 2009. A world of prayer - for one week we want to focus on prayer. Today we come to “prayer for my needs”.

Humans need food and something to drink. Humans need garment and shelter. Humans need other people to relate to them, to talk to them, to be with them, to care for them and to be cared for. A man needs a woman, a woman needs a man. Children need parents. Old people need young people, young people need old people. We need education and guidance. We need freedom. We need a purpose for our life. We are all part of a large network of dependencies.

The bible describes God as the one who is providing all what we need. He is giving it through other people, through the societies we live in, through the work of others and through our own work. He himself gives the ability to work to us, and the success of our work or failure as well. We are responsible for many things, we can influence the world, we have a lot of options and possibilities to do good and evil things. But the bible also claims that nothing can happen which has not been permitted by the eternal Lord.

God knows our needs. He knows every human, he knows us deeply, knows our hopes, our wishes, our pain, our suffering. God knows everything we need, everything we hope for, we long for. He knows our dreams and our fears. The God who is so large that he spans the universe and so small that he can talk to the molecules also knows everything about my soul. And he cares. He is interested in my fate, he wants to be with me, he wants to guide me and live with me every day. He wants to care for my needs. He wants me to live and to prosper, to live a true life full of purpose and love, of truth and hope, a life which has a future.

We should talk to God about our needs. People of all cultures on this planet have brought their needs to the Gods. We should not condemn such behaviour - people have a clue of reality. The God of the universe wants to care. We are allowed to come to God and tell him what we need. Jesus told his people many times in his lifetime to pray for their needs: “ask and you will be given”. Not much is needed to do this. No special form is required. No special address, no spell or formula is needed. We can just go to God, the door is open. He is there and he wants to relate to us. He wants us to come to him with all we need, with our hopes, with our fears.

There is the promise that no prayer spoken will be unheard by God. He does not promise that we always get exactly what we asked for. He is not a prayer-answering-machine. But Jesus promises that God will not give a stone to someone asking for a fish, not a snake to someone asking for bread. God loves us, he will give what ever he can give - in accordance with a wisdom which is often higher than our own wisdom. We should pray for our needs, should go to the eternal one with everything we have and put our future into his hand, every day. ... more texts
