Psalm 23 - The good shepherd ...

Thursday, Jan 7, 2010. In the variety of Psalms there are some old hits which have been sung ever since with enthusiasm and excitement. Psalm 23 is such a hit, an evergreen for thousands of years …

Psalm 23: A psalm of David.

1 The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not be in want. 2 He makes me lie down in green pastures, he leads me beside quiet waters, 3 he restores my soul. He guides me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. 4 Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. 5 You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies. You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. 6 Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

The psalm picks up our deepest hopes and desires. Security, prosperity, peace and supply of all we need. Do we believe that God will be there for us personally as the good shepherd? Is this reality or a dream? We need to realize that the bible takes God serious. He is there. He wants to be this good shepherd the psalm is talking about.

When you read this psalm, observe the parts about the valley of the shadow of death! It is not an easy life which is described here. The table of the Lord is given in the presence of enemies. Life is and will be a struggle - this is the situation we face on the earth. But the Lord has powers far beyond our understanding. He wants to be our Lord and shepherd. He wants to be the center of our life! [R.W.E.P., jesusnetwork.eu]
