Emotions and Faith ...

Monday, Feb 11, 2013. When you think about God, what are your emotions? Perhaps you do not have any emotions towards God, because you do not know God. But you immediately come with emotions towards the church, it might be catholic or evangelical or orthodox.

But many of us have emotions towards God. Some are quite angry about him. Often, this is a reaction on difficulties, we have in our life. We say to God: you did not give me the same chances as others. You did not give me a partner, you did not give me sufficient success in my job, …

What are your emotions? Perhaps you take a minute and try to look into your heart and your mind … to explore what mixture of feelings towards the Lord you have. Is there admiration? Perhaps you admire Jesus, for the way he was. Is there a longing, to be more like him, to be as independent, as consequent, as strong in word and character?

Your emotions might also strongly depend on your state and level of faith. When you do not trust him, you will probably not have positive feelings about him. When you strongly trust him, when you give your life into his hand, then your feelings might be full of peace and thankfulness!

Psalm 100 …

Psalm 100 talks about our topic. It talks about emotions, and the framework which lets the emotions grow. Let us read and see:

1 Shout for joy to the Lord, all the earth. 2 Worship the Lord with gladness; come before him with joyful songs. 3 Know that the Lord is God. It is he who made us, and we are his; we are his people, the sheep of his pasture. 4 Enter his gates with thanksgiving and his courts with praise; give thanks to him and praise his name. 5 For the Lord is good and his love endures forever; his faithfulness continues through all generations.

The Psalmist talks about being HIS people. He has given his life into God's hands, and has experienced his provision and care. This leads to a deep joy, for he is good, and his love endures forever! Let us join this crowd of believers, and let the joy grow in us as well! ... more texts
