Waves of desperation ...

Wednesday, April 10, 2013. When it comes to experiences with “faith”, do you know the following phenomenon, which I would call “waves of desperation”? I will describe what I mean in a moment.

Faith and desperation …

Think about some goal or desire you have, something you want to reach, but you do not have it yet. In fact, it has proved to be very difficult. You had your backlashes. You tried, but did not succeed. You thought: ok, I need to wait. I need to fight. I need to pray. I need to believe. But it did not happen.

When you first want it, but it does not work, you might experience a wave of desperation. Then you start to fight and to work towards it. And when you do not succeed, you might have another wave of desperation. In between the two waves, you might feel full of hope. You put effort into it. You try again. You exercise some patience.

This experience can repeat itself again and again. Perhaps even after 20 years of this up and down, you are still not where you wanted to be. Perhaps you have the wrong idea about how things should work out. Perhaps you are not gifted enough - there are always people who are smarter, better prepared, have more luck and more support …

How does it work with faith? …

**

When we talk about the waves of desperation: I am sure that King David also had these times where he thought that it does not work out. He had waves of desperation. We read about it when he makes decisions which he has to revert later. He is not always fully following the Lord. He tries to sort out things himself - with questionable methods.

Faith is about this fight for faith, for patience, for staying on track, even if the waves of desperation come like the waves of a huge ocean. They seam to be endless, and they seem to have a might which is far beyond your personal power. They seem to be able to destroy everything!

It is a part of faith, that God wins. God is the almighty. He can fight any wave of desperation. He has gone through death, in Jesus. He has had the power to call Lazarus back from the dead. Billions of angels can help and will help - when time has come. From the perspective of God, there is no reason for desperation, but there are many reasons for hope. There are many reasons to know that he is good, and that he will hold us, whatever happens. (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
