What do you know about the Lord? ...

Monday, Feb 17, 2014. What is it that we know about God? What do we know about the Lord? It is a basic question. It is an important question. It is crucial. Only when we know the Lord, we can trust him. Only this type of knowledge will give us a sound decision on how to lead our life.

Do you know the Lord …

The New Testament claims that Christians know the Lord. It claims that they know God. That applied to every Christian, to every believer. It applies to the individuals, not only to the Church as a whole. Let us read a passage from Hebrews:

10 For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws into their minds, and write them on their hearts, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people. 11 And they shall not teach, each one his neighbor and each one his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest. 12 For I will be merciful toward their iniquities, and I will remember their sins no more.” (Hebrews 8, 10-12)

They will all know me, from the least to the greatest. This is breathtaking and fantastic. Every Christian has the possibility to know the eternal God. Every single believer has the possibility to get to know the Lord, the beautiful, majestic, friendly, loving, pure God of the universe!

What to do to know the Lord? …

But the New Testament also knows teaching and training. It knows discipleship. It knows evangelism. All these disciplines are part of “getting to know the Lord”. You have to be preached to, initially, to hear about God. You need to be invited to believe. You kneed to know about the Lord, otherwise there is no basis for trust. When you start to know him, you can start to trust him. You can come to faith!

So we need to look into the biblical books, into the gospels initially, to learn about the Lord. We can also look into the prophetic books of Isaiah, Jeremia and Hesekiel. They all talk about Jesus, about the Messiah. They all call to repentance. They all call to faith which comes deep from your heart. They all call to trust the Lord with all what you are and what you have!

When yo live in faith, the Holy Spirit comes to you, living with you, being in you, renewing your mind and your heart. Then, you get to know the Lord even deeper than before, not with new knowledge, but with personal intimacy. He is there with you all the time. That is what the above prophetic words are about, which are cited here in the book of Hebrews. Know the Lord in an intimate way, the great lover, the great healer, the pure mind, which now lives in you, loving you day by day. (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
