Salvation ...
Thursday July 14, 2016. The story about Jesus is a story about salvation. It is salvation from something and salvation to something. I stumbled over the old Christmas story recently, which is recorded in Luke. It is in the middle of the summer - and in countries with Christian tradition you might think that you should wait till the winter to read it. But it is a highly important story, for every year of the day! Let us have a look …
God's Child …
22 And when the time came for their purification according to the Law of Moses, they brought him up to Jerusalem to present him to the Lord 23 (as it is written in the Law of the Lord, “Every male who first opens the womb shall be called holy to the Lord”) 24 and to offer a sacrifice according to what is said in the Law of the Lord, “a pair of turtledoves, or two young pigeons.” 25 Now there was a man in Jerusalem, whose name was Simeon, and this man was righteous and devout, waiting for the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit was upon him. 26 And it had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Christ. 27 And he came in the Spirit into the temple, and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him according to the custom of the Law, 28 he took him up in his arms and blessed God and said, 29 “Lord, now you are letting your servant depart in peace, according to your word; 30 for my eyes have seen your salvation 31 that you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, 32 a light for revelation to the Gentiles, and for glory to your people Israel.” (from Luke 2)
Simeon knew that there was salvation in this little child. He knew that salvation was needed. And he know where it was to be found!
Without the background of a God which is full of truthfulness and love, we cannot understand salvation. But we all know that we are in an environment of struggle, conflict and fight. We see it day by day on different levels of our own life, and we see it in politics, in economics, in social interaction.

Saves from sin …
“Sin” means separation. It means alienation. We are alienated from God. We are separated from him, from a relationship which is so full of trust and truth, that nothing can break it. We need salvation, just to find out that life has to offer more than conflict and fight. We need salvation, since there is the loving God, the holy and pure God, the trustworthy God.
God comes into this creation as a child, in the child Jesus. He comes to gain our trust, to clarify his love. He comes to show that he cares. He comes in the most vulnerable way, as a little child. He grows up, just among us.
We are saved from this separation in him, when we encounter Jesus, when we put our faith and trust in him. He was the child, he became the young man. He preached and showed who he is, and died at the cross. Then, on the third day, he rose again, went to the father, sent his spirit, and salvation is there for you and for me and every human on the planet.
