C-Text - Christian Blog.

Thursday, April 2, 2009. Over the last days our topic here has been the cross of Jesus. What does it mean? Why is it necessary? We have brought to basic arguments: the cross is a symbol of justice and pain and the cross is a symbol of foregiveness. Today, we want to add one further basic point.

The cross as interpreted and used in the New Testament is a symbol of personal transformation. It is a very intimate and personal symbol of change for the life of a Christian. This change is initiated by the justice and forgiveness which Jesus brings with the cross. If I accept him, that gives full forgiveness for me before God. There is nothing more I need to bring, nothing more I need to pay. No need for struggle and pain, no need for repayments of any type. There is peace in the cross, complete peace, full reconciliation. This new mode is the starting point for personal transformation! It is like a door or gate which I can go through, to enter a new world: God's kingdom!

When I enter the kingdom of God, I cannot remain the same. I will be transformed. I will change. That will also change my mind, my action, my emotions! The transformation which the New Testament talkes about is complete, it is like a new birth. It might not take place in one day - wiser people have realized that it might even take our whole lifetime to be changed into the image of Jesus - but it is taking place every day! We cannot go on with the same egoism, even if we discover after weeks or years that often we still have many of the old attitudes. We cannot go on with a mode of revenge, even if we realize that our feeling sometimes try to drive us towards hatress or ignorance. But we are in transformation mode now and the spirit of God is working on us. His presense is fantastic. God takes us into an adventure of new life, which could not be more exciting and compelling!
