Reach a calm path? ...

Friday, Oct 14, 2011. Do you know the feeling that somehow the difficulties of life do not seem to end? There are challenges in your life, and you solve them, but somehow more and more challenges seem to appear, faster than you can get things sorted …?

How to reach solutions? …

I wonder whether we can reach a calm path for life? Life sometimes feels more like a quite bumpy path. First, there is a storm, such that your ship is in strong danger. The storm calms down, but suddenly there are difficulties with bugs in the food. After this is solved, the machines break down. Then, the people on the boat fight about this and than. … Problems never seem to stop.

We find similar things in our daily life. We need to finish some education. That is a large challenge, and at some point we succeed. But then it is a challenge to find a job. In the job it is a challenge to deal with the tasks we have, to make it a success. But a success leads to difficulties with colleagues. It seems to be an endless story of unfinished things, appearing quicker than you can ever finish anything.

Of course, we need to note that the above phenomena a largely a matter of our perception. We can perceive some challenge as negative. And we can feel quite positive about it. You could also say: we made it through the storm. We removed the bugs. We repaired the machines. We resolved the conflict. That would be a success story. And sometimes the difference is just made by taking a good night sleep and starting a new day afresh!

Trust in God …

But there is more to it than just psychology. Life brings challenges, and life never gives us complete security. The whole setup of everything in our world is strongly dynamic and quite insecure, indeed. Many people try to influence the world, and the element of freedom and choice which is there every single minute makes things highly unpredictable.

Christian faith brings another element into this setup. God is there as the key force who created all of it. He is there as the one who “holds the whole world in his hands”. So there is insecurity for us, but for him everything is under control. He asks us to put trust in him, in all our insecurity. He asks us to come to him, pray to him, search him and find peace in his presence.

God's peace does not use absolute security. Jesus was sleeping in the middle of a storm. The storm was there, and he slept. He calmed the storm, but only after he was woken up by worried disciples. He showed that he was in control all the time, that even in the storm he was completely in the hands of his heavenly father. God asks us to trust in him, in every challenge we are faced with!
