The Lord's Supper ...

Friday, Nov 2, 2012. The Lords Supper is a joint meal, but usually carried out in a ritual way. We eat bread, and we drink wine, which ourdays is replaced by some juice usually.

Eating and Drinking with Him …

The origin of the Lord's Supper dates back to the last meal which Jesus had with his disciples. He took the bread, and broke it, and then pointed towards his death at the cross. The bread, he said, is his body, broken for them.

And he took a cup of wine, which he was about to share with them, and pointed towards his death again. The wine, he said, is his blod, shed for them, for his disciples.

Jesus started with a community. He was there together with his disciples. God is there, with them. He is in their middle, leading them, loving them, talking to them … and teaching them. And he points them to deeper processes, to things they do not yet understand. He establishes some basic image, which they can remember. He founds a ritual, which can be used to celebrate something going on with them and in them. They celebrate historical events which are about to start - Jesus' death and resurrection, the salvation and freedom which can be found in the cross. Forgiveness, truth and love united, in the death which pays all guilt, all hatred, all ignorance, everything!

Pointing towards Deeper Processes …

The Lord's supper is given to us, who believe in him, to celebrate what he did for us. It is there to keep it active, to be with him and let him guide us today as well. And it is there to communicate the events which took place at Golgatha. Listen and see, think and understand. He is the bread of life. He is whom you need every day.

Humans need salvation. It is something which our modern time has often forgotten. Too often we have no clue about holiness and purity. We do not understand the depth of these events. But we can grasp them, when we start to get to know him, Jesus. We can encounter the saint, the truth, in him - even today.

The Lord's Supper is an invitation - come and see, eat and drink, believe and live! It is an invitation to new life, in him. It is an invitation to the community of the saint, to a community of those who have accepted forgiveness. It is an invitation to a different type of relationship. Jesus himself established the Lord's supper - and when I see the strength of this image and act, I can do nothing else but admire his wisdom and power. (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
