My mobile phone can play music, and with ear plugs I can listen to great songs where ever I am, without disturbing others. Yesterday, I listen to music when I cycle to work - which takes me about 20 minutes. Recently, my middle daughter gave me some songs which she shares with a friend. I had them on my phone now … and listened a little …

Do you know the feeling to get unexpected support from someone? I felt like that when I listened to the songs yesterday. They wiped away my frustration - and I felt like 20 years younger when I cycled through the sunshine. I was back in the time when I went to school or when I studied. What a feeling!

Music can do so much. That is a miracle by itself. How can a simple song influence our deep feelings so strongly? How can a simple melody change our existence? Perhaps you say, that it can not change it, only the feelings. But it does change it - the feelings are a crucial part of our daily routine, of our activities, of the way we feel, the way we think and the way we approach our tasks! Music can change the world!

Music is also a part of my relationship withthe Lord. It is good to know that God loves music. He has created those waves and sounds, the melodies and the harmonies. If you read the Old Testament, you find many passages where music plays an important, even a crucial role. David was a great musician. Songs and melodies were a part of his relationship with the Lord. And they were important for his relationships. He played for the king, when he was young. His fate was strongly influenced by his musical talents.

God loves music, and it is a good tradition to have music in our worship services. Music can cover the whole range of contemporary music, with pop and many modern songs. We live in a time where we experience an explosion of good new worship music, everywhere in the world! That is really fantastic. Let us learn and play the new songs, which talk about the Lord and his kingdom.

I believe that God likes to live in a world of melody. Of course, he is also the God of thunderstorms and noise, as he is the God of silence and wisper. But he loves the calm songs and he loves the powerful ones - and he loves us to be with him in the music, in worship and in prayer. (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
