The cook and the meal.

Tuesday, April 21, 2009. We are exploring the relationship between science and faith. Today, a significant percentage of people think that there was a time when faith was popular, but it has been surpassed by the scientific world view. The logic is somewhat like faith=old, science=new, sometimes even faith=bad, science=good. And in fact science is a huge success story. Since the enlightenment our understanding of many events and processes in this world has improved strongly. I like to study the history of science - it is absolutely fascinating to follow the discovery of so many effects and natural phenomena and make them available for humans to control and use them!

There are so many wonders of science that one could nearly start to worship it. We could nearly put science into the center of our world, into the center of our being. We could make science and its progress our focus. That seems to be an option. Why not give our whole life to the scientific progress, dedicate all what we have to a better understanding of the natural laws which govern our world.

Maybe you are now waiting for the “but” - and there is a strong “but” from my side. I would like to put it into an image: assume you have a partner who can cook extremely well. The meals he cooks are so good, so fantastic, tasting great, smelling incredible, looking just amazing. But do you think your partner would like it if you start to make his cooking the center of your life. He wants to be your partner. He wants to be the one you are relating too. He is happy if you love his cooking. But he will be shocked if you start to worship his cooking. He wants to be loved by you for his cooking, but more for what he is: your partner, the one who lives with you. So why should we put science into the center of our life? It is just the love of the creation, but there is the creator. He is not only great at cooking, but so fantastic with respect to many other things! The cook is more than any meal he might ever generate! [R.W.E.P., jesusnetwork.eu]
