The Search for Wisdom ...

Wednesday, July 8, 2015. Have you ever come to the point where you say: I do not know how to act? What is a good way forward? What are the steps I can go? What to think? What to say? What to do?

Like hidden Treasures …

We are not far from wisdom. But we can miss it. The writer of the Proverbs points us to steps which lead to wisdom. We need to serach it like silver, like hidden treasures:

1 My son, if you receive my words and treasure up my commandments with you, 2 making your ear attentive to wisdom and inclining your heart to understanding; 3 yes, if you call out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, 4 if you seek it like silver and search for it as for hidden treasures, 5 then you will understand the fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of God. 6 For the Lord gives wisdom; from his mouth come knowledge and understanding; 7 he stores up sound wisdom for the upright; he is a shield to those who walk in integrity, 8 guarding the paths of justice and watching over the way of his saints. (Proverbs 2, 1-8)

The source of wisdom and understanding is the Lord. The beginning of wisdom and understanding is the fear of the Lord. As long as we ignore him, we will not reach wisdom, nor understanding. Wisdom and understanding comes from his mouth, he himself gives wisdom.

How does it work? …

How does wisdom work in a concrete situation? There is, first, the wish to be rigtheous, to act in a way wich is just and fair. It does not mean that we always manage to do so completely. But at least it should be our goal, our desire, our wish and guiding principle.

And there is, second, the insight into priorities which come from the Lord. He has made men and women. He knows us, and he keeps us in balance, when we live with him. Human desires can quickly lead us astray, they lead into dependencies and addiction. Wisdom is strongly linked to a balance which only the Lord can give!

And there is wisdom in the daily choices we do. The way we use our words. The way we deal with situations, with difficulties and with successes. To live with God does not mean that we are always right with our reaction patterns or our ideas. But he can guide us and help us. Step by step, from one single situation to the next he can be there to let us learn and improve.
