Words V - Never Pass Away ...
Friday, July 1, 2016. Day by day our newspapers are filled with words. Our TV shows are filled with words. Articles and discussions, opinions and news. Nothing is older than the news from yesterday … some people say. And it is true, there are so many words which are just there to keep us busy. Sometimes I think: would it be possible to just pause a little with all those words?
Words that matter …
How do we speak words that matter? That is the key question. Sometimes it is nice to hear words. When you have a little kid of one year, each word it says is usually received with great excitement. Parents and grandparents, friends and brothers and sisters are full of cheers, when the infant starts to talk. And language is something quite fantastic, quite amazing, indeed!
There are others who talk and talk and talk. You cannot stop them. They tell you things you do not necessarily want to know. And they have a deep need to express themselves. This might be ok, but sometimes it can be a way to keep yourself away from the important questions. It can be a tool not to do what is necessary. If you talk too much, perhaps you need to repent and change your life?
Others would like to hear some words of encouragement from your side. They long to hear some words of appreciation. They are frustrated and have given up on you. But you could take them serious. You could start to express your thoughts, give them your attention. Give them some words of love!
Words that last …
How do we say words that matter? Let us have a look at what Jesus said, and also why it matters what he said. He said things which made people come to him. They were attracted, since he had words of life. His words do not only matter, but they will last. In the Gospel of Luke, he says:
Jesus said: Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will never pass away.
(Luke 21, 33)
There are many reasons why the words of Jesus matter. He is God, the son of God who became human. He knows the father, and he himself is the Lord. His words matter, since he knows creation, he knows mankind, he knows you and me. He knows what is the origin and the goal of creation. He knows the origin and the ultimate goal of life. With him there is wisdom and understanding!
And his words matter since he loves you. He wants a relationship with you. He wants to be with you. God is said to be love. And he is said to be truth. He is interested in your life, how ever little it might seem to you. He values you highly, so highly that he died at the cross for you. He wants to be truthful and faithful, the center of your life, a life that matters because you are connected to the source of love and truth and faithfulness.
And his words matter since he wants to take you with him into eternity. Eternity is open, and it matters to enter. He is the door to eternity. He is both able and willing to take you in, when you trust your life into his hands. That matters! (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
