How do I look? ...

Thursday, July 2, 2009. How do I look? Perhaps I am a pretty young man, or a a gorgeous young lady? Perhaps I am well-trained, with athletic arms and legs. Some people have a beautiful statue, others move in a very smooth and impressive way. Others have appealing hips, spectacular hair or beautiful eyes. Usually it is important, how we look, how we move and how we are perceived. It influences our environment, and it influences our own perception, our thinking and our behaviour.

Perhaps I am not that pretty. It might be that there are many parts of my appearance which I perceive as “not that beautiful”. I might have too much weight. I might not be that elegant. My nose might be a little too large, the ears not perfect, the eyes too small, perhaps there is a some tooth protruding in a way which I never liked in my life. It is possible that I remember times when other children teased me because of my appearance. It is possible that people did not want to deal with me because I am too fat, too ugly, not trendy enough. Maybe I look to old-fashioned, too out-of-date. Things like this are not a matter of age - I can look out-of-date with 10 years or with 80 years. I can be trendy with 15 or with 75.

Beauty is relative! There are people who are beautiful, but their beauty has a sense of affectedness. Others are beautiful, but became proud and so self-absorbed that their beauty grew cold and distant. Then beauty changes its character - it is beautiful only in a very limited sense.

Do you know the effect that suddenly people appear beautiful, even if they do not have any features we would normally perceive as beauty? People can be old, with many crinkles, with a stiff leg and limited mobility, and yet be very beautiful. There is something going on in our existence which makes people beautiful, even if their bodies would not win any beauty contest. It has to do with our mind, with our attitudes, with our smile and our behaviour. It has to do with our relation to other people.

Everyone of us has an extremely valuable body. You do not need to be a physician, to know how complex and beautiful our bodies are. We have difficulties to destroy this beauty, even if we behave wrongly over 50 years and destroy ourselves by alcohol, too much food, drugs and missing excercise. We have been given this body by God, by the creator and Lord. And he knows all our appearant and hidden beauties. He loves us deeply, even if we have difficulties to love ourselves or others. If we think someone is ugly, it is not him! It is our own dark eyes who are not able to see the overwhelming beauty which has been given to everyone of us by the creator. If we would open our eyes for the full range of human appearance and capacity, we would be stunned how beautiful the world is and in particular how beautiful these humans are.
