Keep Sunday Free ...

Sunday, Feb 12, 2012. There is the old Christian commandment: keep the Sunday holy! Keep Sunday free from work. If you have many responsibilities, that might be quite some challenge … or some people do not want to keep that command at all. What is special about Sundays?

The topic of Sunday …

The biblical command is clear. Sunday is a day of the Lord. The Sunday was given to the people of Israel, to the people of the Lord. He gave it to them to keep the day free of work, free of any tasks, just to be with him.

Sunday has been taken over by the Christian church. The original Sabbath was moved from Saturday to Sunday, to celebrate the resurrection of Jesus. The free day, however, was kept. It is no longer a command, it is an offer now. It has changed, but its original purpose is alive as it has been at the beginning.

Sunday is a day where you step out of your routine. It is a day of freedom, where you step out of all your personal tasks. It is a day, where you can be souvereign over your time. There are deep miracles and a deep wisdom in this day, the free day, the Sunday!

Biblical teaching alife …

I just had the question, how to carry out the Sunday. I still had to finish a lecture for next week, so time was tight, as usual. So what to do? What about the old command?

I see myself completely free from commands in the sense that Jesus has fulfilled the old Law. He died, and he was resurrected, to start a new creation. We are now living in this new creation in faith in him. So we can search for steps of wisdom in our life. We are living in the freedom of the Spirit.

So I took some time to finish my lecture, but also time to pray and to talk to the Lord. I am confident that he knows me anyway, all my feelings, my thoughts and my deep admiration of his wise commands and advice! Sunday is a great invention. Lets celebrate Sunday! (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
