Superficial ...

Monday, Sept 17, 2012. I have read a really good article on Saturday. It was about some public person, who had sincere difficulties over the past three years. It talked about this man in a sincere way, not necessarily positive, but searching for a way for him to get back to a human life! It was taking him serious, with his problems, and with his perspective.

Where we are superficial …

When we look around, we are often quite superficial. In articles and audio or film contributions we have at most 30 seconds to convey our message. We cannot go deep, we can just make it as attractive as possible, as emotional as possible. We have no chance to go to the bottom of truth, since that will mean we need time, we need to truly discuss various arguments. But too many people will be bored soon, and we cannot afford to loose too many.

If you try to find sincere information about money and how to survive as a family, it is quite difficult. There are statistics, but they nearly never fit to an individual setup and environment. And there are not many public sites to go into a deeper discussion on how you can get your finances sorted out. Most of these are quite superficial as well …

The same is true if it comes to loosing weight or changing your personal habits with respect to sports. You will find many reports and superficial articles, but it is very hard to find full information, which can be understood, but at the same time covers a broad range of possibilities and personal setup. And of course, I also do not want to be bored by arguments which do not really help me …!

God looks deeper …

But I know someone, who is definitely far from being superficial. The Lord does not look for the facade, but he is looking into our heart. He is not at all superficial, but fully committed to the truth, to life, to perspective and future which is completely sustainable.

It is one of the key characteristics of Jesus, not to be superficial. All what he does and says is going deeper, is touching our heart, is touching the fundament of our life. And he tells us to be “spicy” and to lead a life “full of salt”. We are not called to be superficial, but sincere and joyful and truthful.

God is not superficial, and we do not need to accept a superficial approach to life or to anything in our professional and private environment. Of course, we can have our fun. I am completely fine with doing things which we like, … to relax and to enjoy for example some action movie or comedy. But we need to be able to find our way to the deeper things of life as well, free ourselves from the prison of superficiality! (Roland Potthast) ... more texts
